How much does it cost to make an app? Lately, most of the requests we get at Four Ages answer that question before we have even talked: one senior engineer at around $45 to $50 an hour who uses AI tools and also does the testing, the project management and the design. On paper, that is the cheapest way to build an app. I understand why it looks attractive. I also think it is the wrong place to save money.

Below I explain why, how I believe an app project should be staffed, and what that costs. At Four Ages, a lean MVP typically starts around $25,000, and a mid-complexity SaaS product runs $50,000 to $100,000.

Why one engineer cannot do four jobs

AI makes a good engineer faster at writing code. It does not add hours to their day, and it does not turn one person into four specialists. This is what usually suffers when one person carries every role:

  • Testing. An engineer can test their own code, but not as thoroughly as a QA engineer who checks the app on every device and screen size your users have.

  • Project management. Someone has to track the budget, keep the scope under control and send you clear progress reports. That is a role of its own, not a side task.

  • Design. A developer can build screens, but user experience is a separate discipline, and your users notice the difference.

How an app project should be staffed

Everyone should do their own job: engineers build, QA engineers test, a project manager owns the budget and the reporting, and a designer owns the user experience. The total hourly cost is higher than one engineer's, but you know who is responsible for each part of the result. The table below shows what a properly staffed project costs.

App development cost at a glance

These figures come from the projects and engagement models we run today. All prices are in US dollars.

What you are building

Typical cost

Typical timeline

Main cost drivers

Lean MVP (one core user flow, few integrations)

From about $25,000

2 to 4 months from kickoff to launch

Number of user-facing features

Mid-complexity SaaS product

$50,000 to $100,000

Set during scoping

Features, third-party integrations, compliance requirements

Ongoing development with a dedicated team (3 developers + QA)

$25,000 to $45,000 per month

Ongoing

Seniority, tech stack, team composition

Complex or regulated platform

Scoped after discovery

Integrations, compliance, scale

For European engineering teams, typical rates run $40 to $70 per hour, usually structured as a fixed monthly rate per engineer.

What drives the cost of building an app

Three things move the price more than anything else.

  • Scope. The number of user-facing features is the biggest single factor. Every screen, role and edge case adds design, development and testing time.

  • Third-party integrations. Payments, CRMs, identity providers and data feeds each bring their own APIs, limits and surprises. Integration complexity that is discovered late is one of the most common reasons a budget grows.

  • Compliance requirements. If your app handles health, financial or personal data, security and compliance work becomes part of the build, not an add-on.

Platform choice matters too. A native iOS app and a native Android app are two codebases; a cross-platform app is one. We build all three, and the right choice depends on what your users need from the device.

Cut scope, not rates

The cheapest way to reduce the cost of an app is to build less of it first. A smaller MVP from a senior team beats a bloated one from a cheap team. A low hourly rate does not help if the work has to be redone, or if nobody on the team can say no to a feature that does not belong in version one.

When we scope an MVP, we start from the one flow that proves the product works for real users, and we move everything else to a list for later. That list is not a loss. It is the roadmap for version two, informed by what users actually do.

Why app projects take longer, and cost more, than planned

An MVP typically takes 2 to 4 months from kickoff to launch. When a project runs over, the causes are usually the same:

  • Unclear decision-making on the client side, so questions wait days for an answer.

  • Scope creep in the middle of the build.

  • Integration complexity discovered late.

We run discovery, design and engineering in overlapping tracks and validate with real users before the expensive part of the build begins. That shortens time to market and keeps the budget tied to what users need.

The costs you do not see in an hourly rate

If you compare an outside team with hiring in-house, compare the full cost. Our dedicated team pricing includes management, recruiting, retention, equipment and replacement guarantees. When you hire in-house, each of those is a separate cost.

The same applies to freelancers. They work well for small, clearly scoped tasks. For anything longer than a few months, a dedicated team gives you shared context, consistent code standards, built-in QA and a single contract covering IP and accountability.

What to check before you sign

A low quote can become expensive if the contract leaves gaps. Before you sign with any app development company, make sure the contract covers:

  • Full IP assignment to you upon creation.

  • NDAs for every team member.

  • Code in repositories you control from day one.

  • Transparent pricing with no hidden fees.

  • Exit terms with a defined handover process.

Be wary of vendors who resist exit clauses. Our contracts include a no-lock-in commitment: if you leave, all code, documentation and access transfer cleanly.

How to get a realistic estimate for your app

You will get a more useful number from any vendor if you bring three things to the first call: the one problem the app solves, the systems it must connect to, and any compliance rules that apply to your data. With those, a senior team can tell you whether you are looking at a lean MVP or a larger product, and which features to save for later.

If you are planning a mobile product, see how we approach mobile app development. If you want to test the idea with real users first, start with our MVP development service.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to make a simple app?

At Four Ages, a lean MVP typically starts around $25,000. The final figure depends on the number of user-facing features, third-party integrations and compliance requirements.

How long does it take to build an app?

An MVP typically takes 2 to 4 months from kickoff to launch. Clear decision-making and a fixed scope for version one are what keep it on schedule.

How much does it cost to build software with a dedicated team?

A 4-person dedicated team (3 developers and a QA engineer) typically runs $25,000 to $45,000 per month, including management, recruiting, retention, equipment and replacement guarantees.
